Matthias Kostner was born in 1982 and raised in Val Gardena, in the heart of the Dolomites.
His research focuses on the essential aspects of the human being, which is the main point of interest in his art. His wood sculptures are prompted by daily life and elevate every single moment of our existence to something sublime. Sitting, lying down, fluctuating, or in movement, the artist captures the uniqueness of these moments of being and personal essence and turns them into solid wood.
Passionate about sculpture since he was a child, he got involved in the field when he started creating his first figures in the laboratory of his craftsman father. He continues to cultivate a great love for creation and manual skill, and a strong relationship with nature – such a strong presence in his native region.
The expressive strength and the formal-spiritual magic of his works detach them from the impassive flow of life. Within them, one finds something eternal: a dignity and fierceness which gives viewers a new faith.
